Book Riot

When Book Riot launches its daily offers list, the book market seems to go into clearance mode. The promise of titles at reduced prices attracts the eye of those looking for new releases without breaking the bank. However, the speed with which these promotions appear leaves little room for reflection on what truly deserves to be read.

For us, who work at an independent publisher, this frantic pace of discounts translates into a constant challenge. Every title that appears as “deal of the day” competes with our releases for attention, but without the same marketing muscle. The result is that works that require time for editorial building become eclipsed by flash discounts.

The low-price logic can be seductive, but it turns the book into disposable merchandise. When the value of a copy is reduced to pennies, the reader begins to see the act of buying as an impulse, not as a commitment to the work. This mindset undermines the perception that each book carries a creative process that deserves respect.

We would prefer to see the market boost curation, not price reduction. A careful selection, accompanied by essays, interviews and context, creates a stronger bond between reader and author. When the promotion comes with dialogue, the discount ceases to be a trick and becomes a conscious invitation.

Consumers also have an active role: by choosing a title for the story it proposes, rather than the price, they reinforce the chain that sustains literary production. This stance requires resistance to the temptation to “take advantage of the deal” and, at the same time, opens space to discover smaller publishers that lack the budget for massive campaigns.

In the final analysis, we need to reverse the idea that a book only matters when it’s cheap. Reading should be valued as a cultural experience, not as an opportunity for quick consumption. Only then can the editorial ecosystem – including JVA Editora – survive the pressure of daily discounts.
