The announcement of the new MacArthur fellowship cohort brought to light a routine of celebrations that barely engage with readers' reality here. We see the shine of the 20 names as a spectacle that repeats annually, while the challenges faced by independent publishers remain in the shadows.

The Foundation's reputation is unquestionable, but its focus remains on the United States, with little impact on our shelves. When the spotlight falls on those who already have access to resources, the circulation of emerging voices narrows even further.

The logic of rewarding exceptional individuals creates the impression that literature advances through isolated geniuses. This narrative overlooks the collective work of translators, editors, and small publishers who sustain the ecosystem.

If the goal were to foster literary production, the investment could be redirected to translation projects of Brazilian authors or to calls that support reader collectives. Concentrating funds on a few names does not generate the multiplier effect we need.

Many readers still equate quality with institutional recognition, which seems dangerous to us. The implicit meritocracy in awards can reinforce hierarchies that push the public away from less-promoted works.

Alternative models, such as community micro-grants and partnerships between bookstores and schools, show that impact can be created without relying on prestige seals. These initiatives value proximity and direct access to the reader.

We conclude that literature thrives when we invest in the base, in production networks, and in everyday contact with the book, not when we celebrate only an elite of creators.
